Surface Decompression is a specialised training module that equips you with the knowledge and operational understanding required to apply surface decompression procedures safely and accurately in commercial diving operations. It focuses on the protocols and safety principles used to reduce the risk of decompression sickness (DCS) and support time-sensitive diving operations where divers must be cycled efficiently.
Surface decompression is carried out at the surface using a Deck Decompression Chamber (DDC). In surface decompression schedules, the first part of decompression is completed in the water and the remainder is completed inside the DDC. This method is commonly used when sea conditions are unfavourable or when operational demands require reduced in-water decompression time. During SurDO2 operations, divers operate the chamber under the supervision of the diving supervisor and must follow the assigned profile accurately, including correct reporting and documentation according to operational procedures.
This module develops your understanding of how pressure changes affect the body, how surface decompression schedules are applied, and how to follow safe ascent and transfer procedures. Emphasis is placed on correct profile execution, monitoring, safety checks, and emergency response readiness when decompression illness is suspected.
Key areas covered include:
-
Principles and purpose of surface decompression (SurDO)
-
Use and function of the Deck Decompression Chamber (DDC)
-
In-water decompression requirements and transfer procedures
-
SurDO2 operational procedures and profile execution
-
Physiological effects of pressure changes and DCS risk factors
-
Safe ascent and decompression schedule application
-
Monitoring, documentation, and operational reporting requirements
-
Emergency procedures and medical response actions for suspected DCS
By the end of this module, you will be able to explain surface decompression principles, follow SurDO2 schedules accurately, apply safe ascent and transfer procedures, maintain correct documentation, and respond appropriately to emergencies related to decompression illness in accordance with operational safety standards.
